METABOLIC ENGINEERING AND BIOSYSTEMS (https://www.ing.uc.cl/vinculacion-con-el-medio/metabolic-engineering-and-biosystems/)

The School of Engineering at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, invites applications for a full-time faculty position in the area of Metabolic Engineering and Biosystems at the Department of Chemical Engineering and Bioprocesses.

Duties

The successful candidate will be expected:

- To perform excellent undergraduate and graduate teaching and research, and contribute to research and innovation in at least one the following areas:

- Network analysis, inference and data-based modelling of biological systems

- Quantitative, systems level analysis of biological problems

- Computational Metabolic Engineering

- Genome Scale Metabolic Modelling

In addition, it is expected that s/he will lead research and technological projects such as FONDECYT, FONDEF, CORFO, among others.

To develop bridges with other departments at the School of Engineering through research in Systems Metabolic Engineering applied to the optimization of cell factories for the overproduction of chemicals and efficient reduction of environmental burdens. The applicant is expected to interact with departments such as Hydraulics and Environmental Engineering; Industrial andSystemsEngineering; and with other academic units such as the Institute of Mathematical and Computational Engineering and the Institute of Biological and Medical Engineering.

Requirements

Applicants must have a degree in Chemical, Biological or Biomedical Engineering and a PhD in a related discipline with a research focus in metabolic engineering or modelling of biological systems. It is also desirable a Postdoctoral stay with a scientific group of excellence related to research in the area, and several publications in high impact journals related with Metabolic Engineering topics. The applicant must be able to work collaboratively.

Applicants must demonstrate potential for excellence and a strong vocation for all aspects of academic life, be highly motivated to continuously improve their teaching skills, have a genuine interest in getting involved with our graduate programs (specially the PhD program) and be able to develop and maintain an active research agenda.

The successful candidate will also be expected to create new undergraduate and graduate courses (e.g. Systems Metabolic Engineering) and teach traditional courses in Chemical and Biological Engineering (e.g. Biological Engineering Design, Transport Phenomena, Bioseparations). Candidates do not need to know Spanish at the time of applying, but should be prepared to learn the language well enough to teach in the short term.
